UN backs Iran rebuke

The United Nations Human Rights Council has endorsed a statement condemning Iran's violent crackdown on opposition protesters after last year's presidential election.
A total of 56 nations signed on to the declaration - initiated by the US - calling on Iran to investigate the brutal crackdown on street protests a year ago this week.
The nations have rebuked Iran for the many arrests and executions of opposition supporters who would have challenged the result.
The statement sparked controversy at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, when Iran's ambassador tried to stop Norway from reading it out.
The statement highlighted the suppression of dissidents, restrictions on freedom of expression and voiced concern at the lack of progress in protecting human rights in Iran.
